First NZ Trial for World-Leading Eye Surgery Technology at Bowen Hospital

Posted on September 18, 2025

Bowen Hospital is leading the way in eye care innovation as the first hospital in New Zealand to trial the Alcon Unity VCS – a cutting-edge eye surgery platform combining the latest in cataract and vitreoretinal technology.

This makes New Zealand patients among the first in the world to benefit from this breakthrough system, which is already being trialled in leading medical facilities across Europe, Japan, and Australia.

The Alcon Unity VCS is designed to make eye procedures faster, safer, and more comfortable. By integrating two vital surgical systems into one, it provides superior control and efficiency during both cataract and retinal surgeries.

“A Game-Changer for Eye Surgery in New Zealand”

Dr Neil Avery, Ophthalmologist at Bowen Hospital, describes the new technology as a “game-changer” for both patients and surgeons.

“This is a major step forward for eye care in New Zealand. For patients, it means quicker procedures with greater safety and comfort – and faster recovery. For surgeons, it delivers improved control and stability, streamlining surgeries and ensuring consistently exceptional outcomes,” said Dr Avery.

He explained that the new system enhances the efficiency of cataract removal through improved fluidic control and state-of-the-art technology.

Helping Reduce Waiting Lists for Cataract Surgery

Bowen Hospital General Manager Darien Montgomerie says the trial is not only about advancing care, but also addressing a growing health challenge.

“The Unity VCS improves surgical workflow, reducing turnover time and costs. Our early adoption of this world-first technology puts us in a strong position to help reduce public waiting times for cataract surgeries.”

Bowen Hospital works in partnership with Health New Zealand through its parent group Evolution Healthcare, which has a long-term strategy focused on innovation and access to advanced healthcare technology.
